There are many traditions that make college football special, but perhaps none more so than the annual Army-Navy Game. It's a game so special and unique that it gets a standalone spot on the schedule, serving as the final matchup of college football's regular season. This Saturday, at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, two service academies will clash for the 123rd time.

The first meeting occurred in West Point, New York, on Nov. 29, 1890. The academies met 30 times until 1927, and then again in 1930 after a two-year hiatus. The rivalry hasn't been interrupted since. While Army dominated the rivalry for most of that time, Navy has had the edge since and leads the overall series 62-53-7. Navy won 14 straight meetings from 2002-15 before Army won the 2016 game 21-17, and the Black Knights have has won four of six since. However, Navy pulled out the victory last season, beating the Knights 17-13.

Army vs. Navy: Need to know

The Commander-in-Chief's Trophy is not on the line: The trophy is given to the winner of the round-robin competition between Army, Navy, and Air Force every season, but this game will have no impact on the winner. Air Force beat Navy 13-10 and Army 13-7, clinching the trophy for the first time since 2016. Army had won or retained the trophy four times in the previous five seasons, with Navy taking it in 2019.

A win will not send Army to a bowl game: If Army pulls off the win against Navy, not only will it take down its rival, but it will finish the regular season with three straight wins to reach 6-6. However, that's not enough to earn bowl eligibility for the Knights, as two of their wins came against FCS opponents, and only one is counted toward the six wins needed for bowl eligibility. So, no matter what happens Saturday, this is the last game of the season for both teams.

Navy has improved over the season: The start of Navy's season was dreadful, with the Midshipmen losing their opener to Delaware 14-7 and following it up with a blowout 37-13 loss to Memphis. Navy would start 2-5 before turning a corner. A 27-20 overtime win vs. Temple was followed by a close, competitive loss to Cincinnati on the road. A week later, the Mids nearly knocked off Notre Dame, falling 35-32. Then they did pull off the upset they were seeking by taking down UCF 17-14 in Orlando. Don't let the 4-7 record fool you.

Army vs. Navy prediction, picks

There's an incredible trend in games between service academies that is impossible to ignore. Since the 2005 season, the under has gone 43-9-1 in games between Army, Navy and Air Force. That includes a run of 16 straight unders heading into this game. Will that streak end one day? Yes. Might it be Saturday? Sure. Are we going to be on it? God, no. The under is an auto-fire in any game between academies. Prediction: Under 32.5

Army and Navy have come up with some clever alternate uniforms for their rivalry game in recent years, and this year's game will feature some of the best.

Navy's 2022 threads are out of this world -- pun very much intended. The school released its uniforms for the showdown on Monday, and they are dedicated to the 54 Navy graduates who have gone on to become astronauts. That is, according to the school, more astronauts than any other institution has produced. You can even buy them here.

Alan Shepard, a 1944 graduate of the Naval Academy, was the first American in space in 1961 and served as one of NASA's first seven astronauts. He also landed on the moon as part of the Apollo 14 crew in 1971. Fellow graduate Bruce McCandless II was the first astronaut to go on an untethered space walk in 1985.

Navy's helmet will feature handcrafted paintings of McCandless' space walk with Earth in the background. The other side of the helmet will feature the NASA logo.

The uniform, which will be white with red stripes and blue American flag markings, is designed to resemble a space walk uniform. The pants will include the NASA astronaut pin that was given to some of America's earliest astronauts upon returning. Players will also wear shoes designed to look similar to boots that astronauts wear while on a mission.

Take a look at the hype video for Navy's uniforms below:

Army's uniforms are dedicated to the soldiers of 1st Armored Division during World War II. This is the 80th anniversary of Operation Torch, which was the start of the United States' ground operations in Europe and North Africa. The "Iron Soldiers" defeated Axis forces in North Africa in harsh, desert conditions.

Approximately 125,000 soldiers landed in Algeria and French Morocco in November 1942 in what was the the largest amphibious landing in history at that point.

Army released a video detailing the uniforms and their historical significance on Monday.

The greatest rivalry in college football will add its latest chapter Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. Army and Navy will square off in the final game of the 2022 regular season with bragging rights on the line. The pageantry of the Army-Navy Game is unmatched in sports, and CBS will have all of the action.

The Midshipmen have won two of the last three games against the Black Knights, including a 17-13 triumph last season in East Rutherford, New Jersey. That success has come after Army won three straight in the rivalry from 2016-18.

While the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy will not be on the line for the first time in a while -- Air Force already clinched it win wins over both service academy foes this season -- the importance of the Army-Navy Game far exceeds a hunk of metal on a stand.

What should you expect on on Dec. 10? Let's take a look.

Army vs. Navy: Need to know

More than just pride: First and foremost, bragging rights mean a lot in this game. "Go Army, Beat Navy" or "Go Navy, Beat Army," will be shouted from the rooftops for 365 days depending on who takes the win in Philadelphia. It has more importance than that, though, particularly this year. Both teams have had disappointing seasons in 2022 and could use a win to take into an offseason that will be defined by the rebuilding process for each team.

Tyler's last ride: Army quarterback Tyhier Tyler will suit up in this game one more time as he looks to lead the Black Knights back to glory on the program's biggest stage. The senior is West Point's leading rusher, and he has mastered the art of making the correct decisions in the zone read game. We have seen senior signal callers pour their hearts out in the this game to make some of its most memorable moments over the years.

Navy's dynamic attack: The triple option offense always needs multiple running backs doing the dirty work, and the Midshipmen have been led by two sophomores who have emerged as monsters. Daba Fofana is the short-yardage back, does the dirty work and has bene a touchdown machine this year. Maquel Haywood is the slot back who's more likely to bust out the big plays and move the chains on third downs. Army practices against the triple option every day in practice, and it has a big challenge on its hands to slow down this unit.
